USA Women Claim Silver, Secure World Cup Momentum

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – August 4, 2025 – The No. 12 U.S. Women’s National Team wrapped up their 2025 Pan American Cup journey with a silver medal after a hard-fought final against world No. 3 Argentina. Despite a determined defensive effort, the United Eagles couldn’t contain the pressure from Las Leonas, falling 3-0. Both squads had already secured qualification to the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

After a quiet opening few minutes, Argentina struck first in the 5th minute on their second consecutive penalty corner, with Agustina Gorzelany finding the corner of the cage.

Much of the second quarter was a midfield battle, though Argentina continued to press. Jenny Rizzo anchored the U.S. defense with six saves in the first half, including a key stop in the final minute before the break. On that same sequence, Josie Hollamon made a critical defensive save after a dangerous circle entry.

With under a minute to go before halftime, Team USA generated a counterattack. Sanne Caarls sparked the play, clearing the ball from deep in the defensive end to Phia Gladieux, who carried it up the left baseline—but time expired before the Eagles could capitalize.

Just a minute into the second half, Argentina doubled their lead with a perfectly timed deflection by Eugenia Trinchinetti. USA continued to create opportunities, including a long overhead pass to Maddie Zimmer in the 35th minute that led to a shot just wide. Reese D’Ariano also fired a powerful attempt that earned a penalty corner, but Argentina’s goalkeeper read the set play well and made the stop.

In the final 30 seconds, Julieta Jankunas sealed the result with a backhand strike into the corner, making it 3-0.

With the silver medal, USA closes the Pan American Cup with pride and momentum, looking ahead to next year’s World Cup.
